A group of demonstrators confronted the police on Monday next to the Parliament of Catalonia, the day the withdrawal of Catalan President Quim Torra status as a lawmaker was approved.
Torra said the decision to respect the order of the Central Electoral Board (JEC) endangers Catalan institutions and urged the President of the Parliament Roger Torrent and other parliamentarians to cancel the withdrawal of his seat.
Footage shows the demonstrators confronting the police while the plenary session of the Parliament was taking place. Hours later, some incidents were recorded in Urquinaona Square, where protesters set up barricades and burned containers.
On 4 January, a motion was voted on in Parliament rejecting the JECs order. Todays decision has generated tension between government partners JxCat (Junts per Catalunya) and ERC (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya).
